Will we be tested on the particle in a box on the midterm?

Hi!

We will not be tested on the particle in a box on the midterm. Dr Lavelle said in his lecture today that our midterm will only go up to the last slide he did which introduced the different atomic orbitals and did not discuss a particle in a box. In general, our midterm will only contain all the textbook sections up to (and including) 1D.2.

Hope this helps :)

How does the particle in the box concept relate to what was on that lecture? I remember it was mentioned after the electron constructive and destructive phases.

Hi! If I remember correctly Professor disclaimed that it would not be on the first midterm!

Will how to solve for wave functions be on the exam?

No he mentioned that we will not, we just need to know it exists and some very general things.

I wonder if some of the orbital stuff we were getting into is going to be on the midterm.

In one of the lectures, Dr. Lavelle said that the particle in a box model basically says that the electron in a Hydrogen atom is bond within the radius of the hydrogen atom. So the electron is "trapped" in this box that is the hydrogen atom.

No, it won't be.

Thank you guys for clarifying! I wasn't sure how much of the particle in a box concept I should review for the midterm, as I remember Dr. Lavelle saying we wouldn't need to know everything for the first midterm during lecture.

Professor Lavelle said that this would not be on the midterm. I think someone might have already said this but its everything in the text book up to 1D.2

I've heard some different answers on this. I thought orbitals would not be included on the midterm? Also on the syllabus, it says to omit 1C but should we just study it just in case since it's included in the outline?

Thank you guys for clarifying. I was not sure whether particle in a box will be in midterm and now problem solve.

I'm pretty sure 1C problems won't be tested--just know the concepts. I was also confused because some people were saying that orbitals were on the midterm but I think they mean energy levels of transitions between n=some energy level, not the spdf orbitals.

So we don't need to study 1.D?

I think we have to know up to 1D1 for the midterm.

No, but I believe he said it will be on the second midterm.

I am pretty sure we will not be tested on this during midterm 1. It will probably be on midterm 2 though.
