L.35 on Achieve

Postby Sila_Sozeri_1C » Tue Sep 28, 2021 3:37 pm

Hi! I could not balance the third chemical equation in this question. Any help will be much appreciated!

Sodium bromide, NaBr, which is used to produce AgBr for use in photographic film, can itself be prepared as follows:

(1) Fe + Br2 --> FeBr2
(2) FeBr2 + Br2 --> Fe3Br8 (which is balanced to be) 3FeBr2 + Br2 --> Fe3Br8
(3) FeBr2 + Na2CO3 --> NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4

What mass of iron, in kilograms, is needed to produce 2.50 t of NaBr?

For this problem, I believe you need to split the FeBr2 in the third chemical equation to Fe and Br2, just like the first equation. If you try to keep it together, then it is impossible to solve (or at least to me it was...)

On the lavelle website, there's a hyperlink called "Solution Manual Errors 7th Edition," and on there it says that in the third reaction step the compound "FeBr2" should be "Fe3Br8." Basically the book has a typo. After you change the compound, I think the third reaction step should be pretty easy to balance. Hope this helps!

Yup, that makes more sense, thanks for your input!
