We need to know how to write some basic compounds such as H2O or CO2. I will maybe known the basic such as methane and ethanol but I would like to say they would be given. He just said know the basic and gave the example of water, carbon, and oxygen.

Dr. Lavelle said they would be provided for us unless they are a very commonly known formula or if they were in the assigned syllabus problems. I am unsure about the scope of the second half of this statement because there were so many questions so I would just make sure to know very basic ones and a brief understanding on electron sharing and bonds in case you do need to determine it.
