In the exercise, it is asked that you balance two stages of a reaction. I have balanced the first stage, but I am confused on what to use as my reactants for the second stage... Do I include the stoichiometric coefficient from the first balanced equation?
Hi, the reason you would start "fresh" is that when you balance an equation, you are simply trying to make sure that for that particular equation, the two sides are in fact equal to each other. When you start with another equation, you do not include any of the stoichiometric coefficients from previous equations because you have to balance the new one from scratch. So yes, you would not include the stoichiometric coefficient of 2 when starting the second stage.
