When balancing equations, we're suggested to start with elements that occur least in a chemical reaction. Does starting with an element that does not occur least affect the coefficients that we will end up with when balancing? Is it necessarily wrong to not work in order of elements that are less prominent?

No, starting with the least prominent elements is only a suggested route to balance chemical equations.

No, but sometimes starting with the least-occurring element when balancing a chemical reaction gives you an easier starting place for balancing a reaction.
