There are some indications of what the charges of certain ions are based on their composition or place on the periodic table. Those on the left (metals) are positive going +1,+2,+3 and those on the right (non-metals) are negative. However, I agree that there are some charges that do not adhere to these conditions and are more difficult to figure out.
Elements on the left of the periodic table will have positive chargers because they are more likely to lose electrons, and elements on the left of the periodic table will have negative chargers because they are more likely to gain electrons.
