If you are told to balance a chemical equation that has went through combustion and the reactants are given but not the products then what do you do?

Combustion reactions involve hydrogen or a hydrocarbon reacting with oxygen and usually always produce water and carbon dioxide as their products. After you figure out which products make sense from these reactants, you can balance the equation.

The products of combustion are always CO2 and H2O.

If they give you the reactants and not the products and you're told that its undergoing combustion, you can assume that the reactants are oxygen (O2) as well as the other reactant given. The products of combustion are always H2O and CO2, but sometimes other products will be given. From there, you still have to balance the reaction before you can use it to solve problems.

In a combustion reaction CO2 and H2O will always be a product. From there you will be able to balance the equation like a normal equation.

Combustion reactions will always have carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H20) as its products. Whatever substance is being combusted with will always react with oxygen to be combusted (i.e. O2 will always be a reactant). You can then balance your equation normally.

How would we create the balanced equation if we are told that there is an additional product besides CO2 and H2O in a combustion reaction?

When the reactants of combustion are given, the products will include H2O and CO2.
