Concept Question for #M15

When doing stoichiometry (7.55molCl2)*(2mol AlCl3/3mol Cl2) = 5.03 mol AlCl3 -- the limiting reactant
I know how to get to the answer, but I am confused conceptually as to why when you already have the mol for AlCl3 and the stoichiometric coefficient being 2.. why do we need to do more towards it to get the 5.03 mol of AlCl3?? Is it because the 2 mol AlCl3 in the equation is not the specific number of mols and it is just a ratio towards the problem before you do the extra stoichiometry?

Yes, the 2 represents the ratio of product that can be formed. In order to find out how much product you end up with, you multiply the ratio of product:reactant, in this case, 2:3.

Yes, you need a balanced chemical formula in order to complete limiting reactant questions, but the equation only gives molar ratios, not the specific amounts for the given question. So the 2 from the chemical equation is not the amount you have in the question, it is just part of the ratio.
