In class, I remember Dr. Lavelle saying we don't need to memorize any chemical formulas/ molecules yet but in the review, for some questions, i.e. it asks the formula for nitric acid so are there some formulas that we should memorize?
I took high school chemistry so long ago that I don't remember most formulas.

In my class he explained that we don't necessarily need to memorize a bunch of specific compounds but we will use the same ones over and over and eventually they'll just become second hand.

I'd say just search up the formulas for the review. He will probably tell us later which ones to memorize if we ever need to. I wouldn't worry about memorizing for the test too if he specifically said we don't need to memorize them yet.

Re: Formula for nitric acid
Though we sometimes need them for review problems, I believe he will be giving us the formulas as he told us we would not need to memorize any names. Later on, however, he said we would learn it as we use them more frequently.
