I remember in class Dr. Lavelle said the term "combustion" can be referred to as a few different names. Can anyone tell me what else "combustion" can be called?
Do those different names imply a different meaning?

Re: "Combustion" Term
Combustion is essentially just burning something. This will result in oxygen as a reactant and carbon dioxide and water as the products. I think he may have used the terms burning and oxidation. Combustion is an oxidation reaction because oxygen is used in the reaction. All combustion reactions are oxidation reactions but not all oxidation reactions are combustion reactions I think.

Re: "Combustion" Term
You can use the term Metabolism which is a general term for biological processes.
Or you can use the term Oxidation which means the compound reacts with oxygen.
Or you can use the term Oxidation which means the compound reacts with oxygen.
Re: "Combustion" Term
A combustion reaction generally indicates that the products of the reaction will be CO2 and H20.

Re: "Combustion" Term
Professor Lavelle referred to combustion as burning or oxidation of organic molecules. He also mentioned metabolism which occurs when energy is released, such as during cellular respiration. Metabolic processes such as cellular respiration can be classified as combustion reactions because carbon dioxide and water are released as products.
Re: "Combustion" Term
Combustion refers to "burning."
In combustion reactions, oxygen is always a reactant that will yield carbon dioxide and water.

Re: "Combustion" Term
Combustion also means burning. In every combustion reaction, the reactant reacts with oxygen and produces water and carbon dioxide.

Re: "Combustion" Term
Each term burning, combustion, oxidation, or metabolism from my understanding are used depending on the molecules that are in that reaction.
