balancing charges

Could someone explain how to balance charges in a chemical equation? How does that work and when do we do it?

You will practice that more when we start studying redox reactions, Dr. Lavelle hasn't gone over it yet so I wouldn't worry about it too much :)

Since we aren't dealing with oxidation reduction reactions yet it is not needed to balance charges; we are simply balancing the number of atoms of certain elements on each side. Balancing charges will not be covered on Friday's test.

We need to balance charges when working with redox/oxidation-reduction reactions, which occur when one reactant is oxidized and one is reduced. We will need to split the reaction into two half-reactions and balance them by adjusting coefficients and adding H2O, H+, and electrons (in that order). When we add the half-reactions together, it should be balanced. I'm not sure if Lavelle will teach this in 14A though.

Balancing charges are used in balancing redox equations, so I don't think we need to worry about that yet.
