state of acids

Postby Midori Hupfeld 3D » Tue Oct 08, 2019 10:22 pm

When writing out a chemical reaction, we have to label each compound or molecule as solid, liquid, gaseous, or aqueous. My question is, what state are acids in? Are all acids in the same state?

It depends on the acid and the temperature of the acid. Acids can be solids, gases, and liquids. They can also change states depending on the temperature. However, most of the common acids you come in contact with everyday are aqueous or liquid (like acetic acid aka vinegar).

If you are talking about the state in written chemical equations, they are usually aqueous (aq). That is because most acids dissolve to form aqueous solutions.

According to the Arrhenius definitions, acids "release" their H+ ions in water so they are considered aqueous.
