Hey guys, I had a question regarding problem 35 from the Fundamentals L section of the book. It reads as the following:
Sodium bromide, NaBr, which is used to produce AgBr for use in photographic film, can itself be prepared as follows:
Fe + Br2 = FeBr2
FeBr2 + Br2 + Fe3Br8
FeBr2 + Na2CO3 = NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4
What mass of iron, in kilograms, is needed to produce 2.50 t of NaBr? Note that these equations must first be balanced.
The conversion of 2.50 t NaBr to the mass of iron through the use of all three equations and their molar ratios makes sense, but what I'm stuck on is balancing the third chemical equation (FeBr2 + Na2CO3 = NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4). I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to go about balancing it; any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Hey! I had a similar issue because the third equation seemed impossible to balance. It turned out that the textbook I was referencing had a misprint on that question.
The third equation should actually be Fe3Br8 + Na2CO3 -> NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4.
Hope that helps! :)

Hi!
For this reaction, there's actually a typo. The 3rd equation should be Fe3Br8 + Na2Co3 -> NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4. This may have been why you've been experiencing issues balancing it.
Hope this helps :)

There’s an error in the textbook. If you look on the solution manual errors 7th edition on Dr. Lavelle’s website, you’ll see that FeBr2 should be Fe3Br8.
The balanced equation would be: Fe3Br8 + 4 Na2CO3 —> 8 NaBr + 4 CO2 + Fe3O4
The balanced equation would be: Fe3Br8 + 4 Na2CO3 —> 8 NaBr + 4 CO2 + Fe3O4

Hello. I think there might have been a typo in Equation #3. It’s actually Fe3Br8 + Na2CO3 = NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4.
When I balanced it, I got Fe3Br8 + 4Na2CO3 = 8NaBr + 4CO2 + Fe3O4.
When I balanced it, I got Fe3Br8 + 4Na2CO3 = 8NaBr + 4CO2 + Fe3O4.

Hey there!
As the others have said, there's a typo for this problem. The third equation should actually read Fe3Br8 + Na2CO3 = NaBr + CO2 + Fe3O4, which is actually balanceable.
If something like this comes up again, Dr. Lavelle has a page on the Chem 14A website that lists typos in our textbook, so it could be helpful to check there. Hope this helps!

Ohh okay that makes sense, I was also considering that maybe it was an error in the textbook. I kept trying to balance the oxygen atoms and it just wouldn't work. This new formula, meanwhile, seems like it can be balanced. Also, thanks for letting me know that Dr. Lavelle has a page on his website with errors in the textbook, I'll definitely check it out.
