The periodic table includes the element symbol and atomic weight, I believe we are allowed to have a periodic table out during tests, so you don't need to memorize all the symbols as they are there. It'd be good to start getting familiar with the symbols though as knowing them can help solve problems quicker.

Dr. Lavelle mentioned in his lecture on 10/05/2020 that we would mainly be focusing on elements, ions and molecules that are found in living organisms. These are included but not limited to carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc.

I don't think we would need to memorize the entire periodic table since it will always be provided with it and an equation sheet for quizzes and exams. However, I think it would be handy to memorize the common elements' names, symbols, and atomic masses to speed up calculations. I've memorized the first thirty or so elements and it really helps save time on homework and exams since I don't need to reference back to the periodic table for every question.

Like some have mentioned above, I do not believe that we will need to memorize the entire periodic table as that seems a bit excessive. However, it would be in your favor to memorize at least the symbols of common elements but also the weights of some elements such as the elements of life for time purposes.

Hi,

I believe Dr. Lavelle said in his first lecture that we won't have to memorize the periodic table or any equations this quarter because they will be given. He said the class is mainly to understand concepts, not simply memorize equations or other material similar to that. If you want to know some that we work with a lot such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc. then that might help you perform quicker on assignments or mid-terms!

Like what people said above, I think we will be given a periodic table for assignments and exams. But I would recommend knowing some periodic trends and abbreviations of common elements to make it easier to understand compounds and practice problems.

Agreeing with the other comments, I don’t think you should be worried about memorizing the table. I do think it is good advice to try and remember some of the most common element’s atomic number and mass just to make it easier during tests, so you won’t have to spend time looking for them.

Most of the replies are not suggesting memorization of the periodic table but it might be able to have a general of idea of where the elements are on the periodic table because of period trends. It may be more efficient on exams to have a general knowledge of where things are just for efficiency reasons!

The memorization of the periodic table is not necessary. But, I like to remember the first 20 elements as I find that those are the ones that are often repeated. However, you don't have to remember the masses. I have realized that the more questions I do, I remember the atomic masses of the commonly used elements like C, H, O, N.

Dr. Lavelle made a point during one of the lectures that necessary information will be "given" if not explicitly detailed in the problem at hand.

I think it's just helpful in general to be able to know at least what the symbols for commonly used elements are, but we will definitely be able to use a periodic table. It just helps to know certain symbols and basic molar masses for sake of time during an assessment.

I think it is highly unlikely we would need to memorize all the elements, though it probably would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the more common ones, such as hydrogen(H), oxygen(O), carbon(C), etc.

I've always been provided a period table of elements during any exams and quizzes I have taken. It does help a lot, however, to know how the table is organized and the trends that go along with it. Especially during timed exams or if there is a question that asks something about which elements are more likely to react or similar questions.

There is a periodic table provided by Sapling under the Resources Tab on the left side of the dashboard screen. I prefer to use ptable.com. You will end up memorizing the molar masses of biologically essential elements eventually as you take more chemistry classes.

I find it very unlikely that you will have to memorize the entire periodic table. I cannot even memorize all the elements, let alone their molar masses. If you are still unsure, I would memorize the 5 most common elements (e.g. Oxygen, Carbon, etc.)

Hello! The periodic table should be provided during exams, however, it would be beneficial to learn the different patterns that are present on the periodic table. In turn this will conserve time spent trying to analyze the table for particular questions that you may come across during an exam. Some trends include electronegativity, for instance, electronegativity increases from the left of the periodic table all the way to the right. It would also be beneficial to learn of the different element families found on the periodic table.

I remember Lavelle mentioning that memorizing the periodic table is unnecessary, but it would be helpful to know the atomic masses of some of the more common elements because it saves you time. You will most likely memorize them over time, so I wouldn't worry about dedicated time to memorize solely the atomic masses.

I do not think you need to memorize the periodic table. Although, you will probably memorize some of the elements because you constantly use them. Personally, I printed a copy of the periodic table and keep it next to me due to the fact that it is very handy when doing calculations.

I believe that the periodic table we will be able to use on the test is given on the class website. None of it has to be memorized since we are able to use the table but I recommend knowing the atomic weight of the most popular elements like C,O,H,K so that it will be faster to calculate during the exam.

It is not necessary to memorize the atomic numbers and atomic mass for any certain elements, but over time you will find yourself memorizing the atomic masses of the most commonly used elements, such as oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, chlorine, etc.

This is just a short anecdote but in sophomore year of high school I tried learning the "Periodic Table Song" by ASAP Science and I still haven't learned the full thing. I know up too 104 before it gets to fast and I can't keep up. T-T I hope one day I can do the whole thing.

You do not need to memorize the periodic table but if you still would like to make attempt at it I would recommend getting flashcards and writing the chemical abbreviation with the full name on the other. Testing yourself at the end of every week will ensure that you eventually remember it.

Unless you want to speed up the calculation process while taking the exam, I would advise you not to memorize it. There are too many elements to memorize. I suggest you focus on the more conceptual things while taking the test. Memorization is hardly something you have to focus and study for subjects like chemistry, unless you are learning formulas!
