Naming compounds

Postby Nina Fukui 2J » Thu Oct 08, 2020 11:59 pm

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows if it is required to remember how to name compounds in both word and chemical formula form. Many of the questions from the textbook have step a) as writing out the chemical formula and sometimes I would have to search what the compound is.

I think for now the compounds will be given to us, but it's always good to start memorizing the ones that come up most often.

I would recommend learning how to name simple inorganic compounds, which includes acids and bases. The nomenclature of some chemical compounds do get complicated, but I think it's best that we know how to name the simpler and most frequently used ones like H2SO4 (sulfuric acid).

I believe Dr. Lavelle said the compounds would be provided for us, but if you're looking to learn more this is a really helpful website!

Hi! I don’t think we are required to know how to name and identify compounds for exams just yet (based on what Dr. Lavelle mentioned before), but it would probably be helpful to brush up on some basic nomenclature anyway :)

I don’t think we have to memorize just yet how to name compounds according to what Dr. Lavelle said during a lecture. I assume we may have to know basic ones in the future though.

I think it's important to note that even if memorization is not required, it can be super important to remember correct terminology and formulas for common compounds! Figuring out the name/formula for a compound takes time, which can be well spent elsewhere while taking an exam.

I believe that Dr. Lavelle said there would be a given sheet of helpful information to use on the exams, and that the names of some compounds would be on there. However, my first time taking this class (though at another college) the professor had us really practice our naming of compounds and in turn did not provide the formula or wording on the exams, making us responsible for knowing them. I would just suggest practicing your polyatomic ions to get the endings and formulas right to help strengthen your knowledge of naming compounds and ions.

Hi!

Yeah I had the same problem too. What I suggest is to just go over the main chemical formulas (i.e. sulfide, bicarbonate, hydroxide, etc.). Those are kind of the basic formulas, but I don't think we are required to memorize anything more complicated than the examples.

Hope it helps!

From what I've heard from my TA, during exams everything we need such as chemical name/ formula will be given to us.

Hello! most compounds will be given to use on tests but my TA said it would be extremely helpful to learn basic compounds such as water, carbon dioxide, etc. for our own purposes.

Hello! I believe that the names of compounds will be provided on the exam, however, it would still be beneficial to learn naming basic compounds. There are basic tactics which you can familiarize yourself with that may help in the long run in naming compounds. For instance, when you are naming an ionic compound, the cation will contain the same name as the element, however, an anion will contain a similar name to the element itself, but the ending of the element name will be replaced by '-ide'

Hello, I believe when it comes to being familiar with the compounds and basic elements, it will be beneficial for your growth in the course. In exams or quizzes, I do believe that we will be given this information in order to provide an answer to the question.

The majority of the compound names will be given on the test. But, it is always helpful to know the compounds that occur repeatedly like CO2, H20 (as someone already mentioned above).

I found this really helpful link : https://youtu.be/ptAw20kem90

I'm pretty sure that compounds would be provided, as I think we start learning how to name compounds in organic chemistry. It could still be useful information to know, though.

I think Dr. Lavelle said he will provide a sheet of formulas/compounds we need for any problems on tests!

In my AP Chemistry class, we were required to memorize the strong acids and bases and a list of polyionic compounds. While nothing has been explicitly said, I think it would be a good idea to just because of the prevalence of certain compounds in practice problems.

In the past when I asked this question to professors the general answer is that you are not required to remember anything right now, but it's a good idea to start memorizing early to prepare for organic chemistry.

Hi! As previous replies have states, we don't need to memorize a bunch of compounds for now. However, if you want to start practicing how to name compounds, I think there is a section of the textbook fundamentals that covered the topic. I believe it was 1D, but I'm not entirely certain.

Hello! Ok so I talked to my TA about this and he said that we do not necessarily have to memorize them as Dr. Lavelle will provide them to us but it is in our favor to be comfortable with the names in case of time constraints for example.

Similarly to how you begin to memorize molar masses off of the periodic table for elements, some compounds that are common you will more than likely begin to memorize just be the repetition of practice problems.
