L35 Balanced Equation

Postby Alison King 3L » Sun Sep 26, 2021 3:35 pm

L35:

Sodium bromide, which is used to produce for use in photographic film, can itself be prepared as follows:

What mass of iron, in kilograms, is needed to produce 2.50 t of NaBr? Note that these equations must first be balanced!

I understand how to balance the first two equations, but I can't figure out how to balance the last one?

Hi Alison,

I believe there is some problem with the last equation. I think it should be Fe3Br8 instead of FeBr2.

I believe that the last part of the balancing should be Fe3Br8 rather than just FeBr2. Once you fix that error it should be easy to balance out with the final equation coming out to Fe3Br8 + 4 Na2CO3 --> 8 NaBr + 4 CO2 + FeO4.

If you use Fe3Br8 to balance the equation, it should be much easier.

Once you do this, you can convert 2.50 g NaBr to moles, then use the mole ratio to calculate how many moles of Fe3Br8 are needed, and then you can calculate the grams needed.

Keep in mind that in real life, the actual yield is less than the theoretical yield, so more reactant will be needed!

Use Fe3 Br8 to balance out the equation rather than FeBr2. So the final answer would be…
Fe3Br8 + 4 Na2CO3—> 8 NaBr + 4 CO2 + FeO4

Use Fe3Br8 and it should work!
