If actual yield is greater than theoretical

Postby Amy Jordan 2A » Thu Sep 30, 2021 9:24 am

Hi! I was just wondering if for a question you calculated an amount for the actual yield that is greater than the theoretical yield, making the percent yield greater than 0, does that automatically mean that your calculations for the actual yield are wrong or is that a possible answer to a question? I hope that made sense. Thanks so much!

Actual yield is almost always less than the theoretical yield due to the side reactions and impurities that happen during a reaction. If the actual yield is higher than the theoretical yield, the calculations might be wrong or something went wrong during the reaction.

Hi!

I'd say if you're getting an actual yield that is greater than your theoretical yield there is probably something wrong with the answer. Actual yield should probably be less because it accounts for the impurities of the reaction when done in real life while theoretical is just straight calculations.

Hope this helps:)

Theoretical yield is also called maximum yield because it is the maximum amount of products produced based on calculations, thus actual yield should always be less.

Some reasons for why the actual yield is less are other reactions occurring on the side, material sticking to the container, and, as previously mentioned, impurities in the reaction.

Hello! So your actual yield is always smaller than your theoretical yield because the reality of experiments is not perfect. The theoretical yield is always your maximum yield, so anything bigger would be wrong. A couple of reasons your actual yield may be bigger are like you said you got the calculations wrong, or the experiment didn't go as plan, or there's some other substance that didn't fully react that is contributing to the yield appearing to look bigger than it should be. In summary, no your actual yield CANNOT be bigger than your theoretical yield! :)

Actual yield will always be smaller/less than theoretical yield since theoretical yield is known as the max yield and reactions never fully work out since there are so many outside variables.

Actual yield should always be less than the theoretical yield. A situation where actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield signifies that there were more products made than expected from the reactants available, which would be impossible!

Hi, so actual yield should be less than the theoretical yield because the theoretical yield shows what would happen if the reaction was not affected by anything else, so that the max amount of products could be created. Thus, the actual yield should be less because it accounts for any factors that may cause the reaction to not produce the max amount of products. Additionally, the actual yield should be less than the theoretical yield so that the overall percentage yield is not above 100%.

The actual yield is always less than the theoretical yield because the theoretical yield doesn't take into account side reactions or impurities , spills, or that they might stick to the beaker.

No matter what scenario is given, your actual yield will always be less than your theoretical yield due to the fact that when conducting the experiment there will be impurities such as some of the reactants sticking to the sides. With these impurities comes a smaller yield then the theoretical yield which is why scientists consider an experiment to be fairly successful if it is within the 90 percent yield range, as it will never be perfect.

Hello,

Another way to think of theoretical yield is the "maximum yield". Basically, the theoretical yield is simply the ultimate amount of product that can be formed from a reaction. Actual yield will never actually be equal to theoretical yield due to many factors such as entropy, side reactions, impurities, etc. As such, if your actual yield is greater than your theoretical yield, you most definitely made an error and should double check your work.

It is very unlikely for the actual yield to be greater than the theoretical yield due to side reactions and impurities that may occur. Some reactant might stick on to the side of the beaker when pouring which may also cause the actual yield to be less than the theoretical yield that is calculated.

Hello!
Actual yield is almost never greater than the theoretical yield, due to the obstacles that are posed during the process of experimenting, i.e. impurities, side reactions, etc, limiting the amount of product that is finally available. Therefore, if your actual is greater than theoretical, that means the theoretical yield may be calculated wrong, since a theoretical yield assumes that nothing went "wrong," and every ounce of the product was preserved -- which will not happen in a real experiment. The percent yield calculates the proportions of the actual yield to the theoretical yield, and thus the actual yield cannot have a portion greater than a yield that is supposed to be "perfect."

As many people have stressed, the actual yield will not be greater than the theoretical yield if the calculations are preformed incorrectly. I just want to point out that in a completely perfect situation this could not happen, but that’s not to say the measurements going in were just inaccurate to a degree. Meaning I don’t think this should necessarily imply that results should just be thrown out.

Your actual yield CAN be greater than theoretical yield during an experiment, but that usually means you just measured out too much of your reactant or possibly ( but unlikely) a side reaction occurred with the environment in which a product was additionally produced. If you do everything right during an experiment, your actual yield will only decrease (due to side reactions, stuck to test tube, etc.)

Although it is very unlikely the actual yield would be greater than the theoretical yield, it is possible. This could occur if solvent is still present in the product due to incomplete drying or from incorrect weighing.

Usually the actual yield is less than the theoretical, but there are few scenarios where the actual yield may be greater. Some reasons may include measuring too much, having additional product from side reactions, or even wrong calculations. It isn’t impossible, but very unlikely.

Actual yield can never be greater than theoretical yield, as the theoretical yield is literally the theoretical maximum assuming there was no loss in mass through side reactions or any mess ups. If the actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield it is safe to say something went wrong with the calculations.

Actual yield cannot be greater than theoretical. Theoretical yield is also called the maximum yield since it is the maximum yiel of product you can obtain if you do your calculations correctly. Actual yield is almost always less than this and can never be more.

If the experiment is conducted using the correct amounts of the reactants, then the actual yield should less than the theoretical yield due to side reactions and some of the elements/compounds sticking to the sides of the container. If the actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield than this means there was something wrong with the experiment itself. Usually this is due to an incorrect measurement of the reactants.

The actual yield cannot be greater than the theoretical yield since the theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced. The actual yield will always be less due to outside variables such as impurities or side reactions. If the actual yield is coming out greater than the theoretical yield, there is most likely a miscalculation.

It would have to be a miscalculation. Theoretical yield is the best possible outcome for amount of product created based on amount of reactant. Actual yield could only equal or be lower than theoretical yield, never higher, because otherwise the entire concept of actual vs. theoretical would break down entirely.

Hello! From what I've learned, it's not 100% correct to say that actual yield is NEVER going to be more than theoretical yield. It can happen, it's just not very likely. It is a lot more likely that the actual yield will be less than the theoretical yield. If the actual is more than theoretical, the explanation for why this occurred really just depends on the experiment itself. Hope this helps!

I think this may be miscalculated because generally speaking, actual yield is less than theoretical yield due to specific factors that come into play when actually doing an experiment VS calculating it. The actual yield can be greater than the theoretical but only in rare cases. Hope that helps!

The actual yield should never be above the theoretical yield. If this occurs, I would recommend double-checking the numbers from the problem were copied down correctly as well as redo calculations. Human error would probably be the only explanation for this situation.

Usually, as a chemistry law the actual yield will generally be lower than the theoretical yield because the yield calculated and determined after a chemical reaction has occurred will have accounted for loss of material due to human fault, substances sticking to the beaker walls, or other human errors, meaning that your actual yield calculation has faults and the theoretical yield is actually greater.

Hello, the actual yield of a chemical reaction will always be less than the theoretical yield because of impurities, substances sticking to the wall of the containers, etc. The theoretical yield is the maximum amount that can be used so it's a b8gger amount. If your actual yield is bigger than your theoretical yield, then I'd suggest double checking you used the correctly organized yield equation, and that you didn't round throughout your work until the end.:)

The theoretical yield is the "best case scenario". This means that the theoretical yield is implying that every step of the experiment went perfectly and no mistakes were made. This is not logical, due to side reactions, impurities, etc. Therefore, the actual yield can never be greater than the theoretical yield. At the very most, the actual and theoretical yield can equal each other, but that would be very unlikely (because of side reactions, etc.)

It is impossible for the actual yield to be greater than the theoretical yield. If this were to be the case, then it would violate the law of conservation of matter. If the actual yield were to be greater than that would mean that matter had been created as the reaction had exceeded its maximum output given its reactants. The reaction cannot go beyond completion. The actual yield will always be lower than the theoretical yield due to things like side reactions or impurities in the reactants.

Actual yield can never be greater than theoretical yield. Due to the law of conservation of mass, you cannot create mass during a chemical reaction. However, inefficiencies during the reaction could lead to an actual yield lower than a theoretical yield.

Because theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced in a reaction (only being capable if there are perfect conditions throughout the reaction), actual yield should always be less due to side reactions and impurities, among other things.

Hi! Yes, when actual yield is larger than theoretical yield your answer is automatically wrong. Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced with the limiting reagent as a reactant, so the actual yield cannot be larger than it.

Hi! Theoretical yield is the maximum yield meaning it's the amount of a product that would be created if the reaction was 100% efficient. If your actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield, then there was probably some human error.

The actual yield will almost always be less than the theoretical yield, so your percent yield should always be between 0-100%. If your actual yield is greater than your theoretical yield, it likely means you messed up somewhere and should check your work/data.

The theoretical yield should be less than the actual yield. This is due to the fact that excess product is not always calculated into the equation.

Actual yield is almost always less than theoretical yield, because loss of substances may occur simultaneously while the reaction is occurring. (you may lose substances, for example if substance gets stuck to the side of the beacon during the reaction; but you can never gain substances)

Theoretical Yield represents the perfect situation in which the maximum amount of product is made with the reactants provided. Due to the fact that reactions almost always produce less product than expected, the Actual Yield is almost always less than the Theoretical Yield. If this is not the case, it would be advisable to recheck one's work or take a look at one's experimental procedure again.

The theoretical yield is the absolute maximum yield, and the actual yield will always be less than the theoretical yield. So, if you calculate a value where the actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield, it is likely that you made a mistake while calculating or measuring the actual yield.

From what Lavelle has presented in class about actual yield and the assumptions we make that some parts may be left in the beaker or may leave the reaction site, I think that for all problems that will be presented to use the actual yield will be less than the theoretical yield. If it isn't then there must be a mistake with the theoretical yield calculations, because we are not going to calculate the actual yield, it will only be provided to us.

If your actual yield is greater than your theoretical yield then something in your calculations is wrong. As stated above by multiple people when a chemical reaction occurs, some of the mass is lost as heat. You may find impurities in your final product and/or there may be other side reactions that occur during the reaction so your actual yield should always be less than your theoretical.

I believe actual yield should always be less than theoretical yield because, during the actual experiment, the circumstances are not always perfect. For example, there may be side reactions and because of this, there will be less yield than what was predicted which is the theoretical yield. Therefore, the actual yield should be less than the theoretical yield.

Hi, I don't think actual yield would ever be greater than theoretical yield so that shouldn't occur in your calculations.

Actual yield is always less than theoretical yield, so it's most likely that you made some kind of mistake in your calculation.

Actual yield is normally never greater than the theoretical yield

actual yield should not be greater than the theoretical yield because theoretical yield would be the product in perfect conditions which is not really possible in actual reactions

Hi, I think that this scenario would never actually occur because theoretical yield assumes a perfect scenario where no amount of product is ever lost. However, in real life many factors can influence the amount of product produced and would therefore would always yield a lesser amount than the theoretical.

Hello!

Usually, the actual yield can never be more significant than the theoretical yield due to imperfections and impurities. Therefore, if the actual yield is greater than the theoretical yield, there might be an error in the calculation.

Hope that helps!

This means something probably went wrong during your calculations of the actual yield. The actual yield should for the most part be always less than the theoretical yield because of experimental errors.
