Re: What is the difference between cis and trans?
A molecule has a cis configuration when two groups are on the same side while trans is when they are on opposite sides. Look at the example in your red book of C2H2Cl2.

Re: What is the difference between cis and trans?
Trans is when the elements are at opposite sides and their dipoles cancel out, so the molecule is polar. In cis, the molecules are next to each other, so the dipoles do not cancel out, and the molecule is polar.

Re: What is the difference between cis and trans?
Just to clarify from above, trans is when the dipoles do cancel out and the molecule is nonpolar. Cis is when the dipoles do not cancel out and the molecule is polar.

Re: What is the difference between cis and trans?
Cis is when two things are on the same side of the double bond while trans is when they are on opposite sides of the double bond.

Re: What is the difference between cis and trans?
"cis" means that two similar atoms are on the same side of the molecule, while "trans" means the two similar atoms are placed on opposite sides from each other in the molecule.
