Cis and trans compounds

Postby 206189669 » Sat Dec 09, 2023 11:19 pm

Should we know a lot of details about cis and trans compounds?
Or should we just know the basics about how the differences of these two can affect a molecule bc of polarity and shape?

I think it would be best to known what each one means and how it can affect the behavior of a molecule.

An example he gave in lecture was that cis-diammine-dichloro-platinum(II) would be a bidentate ligand (since both of the chlorines are on the same side there could be two bonds made) while trans-diammine-dichloro-platinum(II) would be a monodentate ligand (since there is only one chlorine to bond with on each side).
