Determining chirality

Postby Chem_Mod » Wed Aug 17, 2011 4:36 pm

Is there any way to help me to figure out whether a molecule is chiral?

If the molecule or complex has a mirror plane it is not chiral. Look for mirror planes.

There are several ways to determine whether a molecule is chiral (optically active) or achiral (optically inactive) like examining its structural features, the presence of chiral centers, and the symmetry of the molecule. The presence of at least one chiral center, along with the absence of an internal plane of symmetry, is a strong indicator of chirality
