Crystal Field Theory explains how metal ions interact with surrounding atoms or molecules (ligands) in coordination compounds. It focuses on the repulsion between the negatively charged ligands and the electrons in the metal ion's d-orbitals. This repulsion causes the energy levels of these d-orbitals to split into two groups. The pattern of this splitting varies based on the ligand arrangement around the metal ion. This energy level splitting affects the compound's color and magnetic properties, as the electrons absorb light to move between these split energy levels, leading to specific light absorption and thus the color of the compound.

Hope this helps!
