Crystal field theory is a model we use to help explain what is happening on a molecular level between specifically transition metals and ligands. It describes the binding between ligands and a metal, and helps explain the complex splitting of d and f orbitals that we observe when a ligand approaches the metal. Another key point is that is explains crystal field stabilization energy that tells us how a ligand stabilizes the metal complex.
