Why do transition metals form cations and what's the relation between a TM complex and a coordination compund?

Transition metals form cations in order to attain more stability. As they lose electrons from the s subshell, they are able to become more stable.

As far as I am aware coordinate compounds don't contain transition metals which is the determining factor of difference.
