The coordintion number is correlation to the central metal atom as it speaks to how many ligands (or points of connection for bi/tridentate ligands) can connect to the central metal atom.

For example, a metal atom with four ligands attached would have a coordination number of 4. An atom with six ligands attached would have a coordination number of 6.

Yes, compounds may bond to transition metals and be ligands. Depending on the shape of the compound may be polydentate and bond to more than one ligand bonding cite.
