derivatives and integrals

Postby 905084274 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 10:42 pm

Can someone explain what Lavelle was going over in lecture today about how dV or the derivative in V solves for something? And also I don't understand why the main equation we went over today involves taking an antiderivative/integral. Is this because we want to solve for the derivative and find the change in a given system?

Work is the integral of the product of force and displacement. In class, he used that definition of work to derive the formula for work done by a piston. However, you can just use the formula using delta V because that is more applicable to the scope of this class.

He gave us two equations that were the same thing, just in different forms. The integral and the other equation mean the same thing; it's just different math.

The integral is used to find the work. It's probably best to use the other equation he taught us, the integral was more for deriving the equation.

When Dr. Lavelle uses derivatives and integrals, it just a way to show how he was able to derive the equations. They are more just used as proofs. Use the equations that are derived.

He showed a way to solve using calculus to show how the equation was derived.

he won't actually have us do the calculus he was just showing us how he got to the equations
