How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
People keep mentioning ideal gasses, and I have no idea what is considered an ideal gas? How do you know the difference?

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
An ideal gas is a man-made notion about a "perfect" gas to simplify calculations. It refers to a gas in which the molecules don't have any volume and don't interact with one another, which of course does not exist in real life.
All our equations are assuming that the gas is ideal, and in questions you can generally assume that the gases can be considered ideal.

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
An ideal gas is a gas that would take up little to no volume in an area of high temperature and low pressure, and so if a gas behaves enough like an ideal gas, the ideal gas law is applicable

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
There are many conceptual factors to determining if gases are ideal or not, but for the sake of this course I think we are supposed to see every gas as an ideal gas. Many gases do not behave like ideal gases but we havent considered that in class yet
Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
I think we are supposed to assume the gases in the questions are ideal gases. Sometimes the question will state it as well.

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
Usually a problem will explicitly mention something as an ideal gas so we most likely won't need to identify it on our own.

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
Most of the questions we will receive assume that the gas is an ideal gas. It will explicitly tell us.

Note ideal gases are usually exemplified by noble gases ie helium argon etc. This is because the molecules are singular

Re: How do I know what is an Ideal Gas
The assumption is that it's an ideal gas, but questions will usually state that it's an ideal gas.

the questions usually tell you directly to assume ideal behavior
