What does each variable/letter represent in the equation PV = nRT?

P=partial pressure of the gas
V=volume of container
n=mols of substance
R=ideal gas constant

You would use this equation in our context to convert between partial pressures and concentrations (n/V) of reactants and products to be used in calculating equilibrium constants.

P is pressure, V is volume, n is the number of moles, R is the gas constant (the values should be given to us), and T is temperature in K.

It is important to note that the units on P will determine what value of R is used (whether that be atm, bars, Pa ext). In short, make sure your units cancel!

If a question gives you concentration you can still use the equation, because (n/V)= concentration, where n is number of moles and V is volume. moles/volume is molarity and that is concentration
