how does a reaction respond to minimize the effect of increasing pressure?

The easiest way to think about it is if you have 2 moles of gas on onside and 1 mole of gas on the other. If you increase the pressure, the reaction will favor the side with 1 mole of gas.

The short way to think about it is that if pressure is increased, the reaction shifts to the side that has less moles. However, Dr. Lavelle reviewed how change in pressure alters the Q in class, which provides the correct justification for the direction the reaction shifts.

There's a longer explanation that I'm sure is in the textbook, but like was said above, when pressure increases, the reaction will shift to the side with less moles.

When you increase the pressure, the reaction shifts towards the side with the least moles of gas because it wants to reestablish equilibrium. On the other hand, when you decrease the pressure, the reaction shifts towards the side with more moles of gas because it wants to return to the pressure it was at at equilibrium.

When pressure is decreased the reaction will favor the side with the least moles of gas as it will want to restore equilibrium by increasing the quantity of that molecule(s).

When pressure is increased, volume decreases and concentration increases. Keep in mind that the response to this change only applies to gases. Therefore, the reaction will shift to the side with less moles.
