Ideal gas constant

Ideal gas constant
On the list of constants, it shows R = 8.206 and also 8.314 with the units of K and mol^-1 and atm^-1 and J. But what is the difference between these two constants; why can’t they both be used?

They might have different units associated with them, or maybe one is for higher pressure and one is for lower pressure. If they are associated with the same units then you may be able to use them interchangeably.

As you can see, the R constants use different units. When you're solving a problem, it is important to consider the units you are using when utilizing the gas constant. You can't use the two interchangeably because the units are different in either situation. However, they carry the same value, just for different units.

The different gas constants account for the different unit forms of pressure, volume, and temperature. Basically, you have to choose the R value that matches the units provided to you in the problem. Or you can just figure out which R, when used in calculations, will cause all the units to cancel out.

You need to use the constant that has the same units as the values given in the question as you need units to cancel out.
