Postby ursulavictorino1K » Sun Feb 23, 2020 8:38 pm

How do you determine the conjugate acid/base given one of them?

A conjugate acid has one one more + charge and H atom than the matching base while conjugate base contains one more - charge and one less H atom than the matching acid.

A conjugate acid is the acid when it loses its H+ ion, so it should have a one less charge than the acid. A conjugate base is the base when it gains an H+ ion, so it should have one more charge than the base.

you have to look at the charges. Once you locate the acid on the left, the conj. base will be the compound without the + charge or no Hand vice versa.

A conjugate acid differs from its species by one H+ (ie it has one more H+ than the original species. A conjugate base, on the other hand, has one less proton than its original species.

A conjugate base will have one less proton than the acid and the conjugate acid will have one more H+ than the base.

Is a base a proton acceptor or donor?

A base is a proton acceptor!
