Bars to atm

Postby SLai_1I » Tue Jan 05, 2021 2:27 pm

When talking about units of pressure, what is the conversion from bars to atm, or vice versa.

Hi! When converting from bars to atm you would multiply the bar value by 0.986923. When converting from atm to bars you would multiply the atm value by 1.01325. Hope this helps :)

I'm pretty sure in one of the modules he said that in this course we are just going to use the conversion 1 bar = 1 atm! I'm not 100% sure which module it was though it might have been part 1

Even though 1 bar isn't exactly equal to 1 atm, it's super close and Lavelle said we could just approximate that 1 bar = 1 atm!

We're considering 1 bar to be equal to 1 atm from what Lavelle says and when calculating an equilibrium constant etc if all units are in bars there is no need to even make a conversion to atm because K has no unit.

While Lavelle said in one of the modules that for the purposes of this class, 1 bar=1 atm, I personally haven't come across any practice problems yet where you need to convert from bar to atm. I think you will be given one or the other, so don't worry too much :)

One of the audio visual modules said that for now we're just going to convert 1 bar = 1 atm.

In lecture today, Professor Lavelle said since their values are so similar, we would be approximating 1 bar as 1 atm.

In lecture today (1/6/2020), Professor Lavelle said that we can approximate 1 bar to be 1 atm. In case you're curious, the conversion is 1 atm is about 1.013 bars. If you ever worked with kPa and atm, you might remember that 1.00 atm is about 101.3 kPa. Because 1 pascal (Pa) = 1 x 10^-5 bar, we can say that 1 atm is about 1.013 bars.

Can we use Pa in this course?

My TA said that we will be approximating 1 bar = 1 atmosphere because they are similar enough when converting between them.

The values are close, so for our calculations we'll assume that 1 bar=1 atm.

One bar is about equal to one atm. There is a slight difference, but for the purpose of this class, you can use the two terms interchangeably.

When do we use atms versus bars (if we aren't given the original units)?

We are allowed to approximate 1 bar = 1 atm! There is a very small difference, though.

for this course do we prefer one unit over the other? or does it really just depend on what the question is asking for?

If we are assuming that 1 bar is equal to 1 atm, would we assume that the conversion would allow for infinite sig. figs?

There is a very small difference between the two values, so we would approximate 1 bar = 1 atm as the unit of pressure.

There is such a small difference between each unit that it is ok to make 1 bar equal to 1 atm.

The values are a bit different, but for this class, Dr. Lavelle said they are close enough to just approximate it as 1atm=1barr.

Hi!

So 1 atm = 1.01325 bar, but since the values are so close, Dr. Lavelle mentioned in his lecture that, in this course, we will just assume that 1 atm = 1 bar to simplify our calculations. Hope this helps :)

For one problem on the week 1 homework due tonight we have a problem that utilizes the units of bars so in order to solve is it mandatory to covert it to atm or is it just recommended?

1 bar is approximately 1 atm. Bar is the SI unit while atm is more traditionally used in chemistry.

Are bar and atm both units used for pressure? I know now that they practically have a 1:1 ratio so it’s just a fact of like “labeling it correctly?

Dr. Lavelle said that we should assume 1 bar=1 atm since they are relatively close in amount to be considered equivalent in our calculations.

Since they are relatively equal around 1atm = 1 bar, both units can be used interchangeably when solving problems!

The difference between bars and atm is very small, so in this class, Dr. Lavelle said that 1 atm is equal to 1 bar. You probably don't need to worry about the difference between the values.

You can use the conversion of 1atm:1bar as it is close enough. For the questions we are answering you should be fine. However, if you decide to do lab work or go into higher chemistry you should look up the actual conversion values.

1 atm = 101325 Pa = 101.325 kPa = 1.013 bar = 760 torr
