Torr as a Unit of Pressure

Postby Bronson Mathos 1H » Sat Mar 13, 2021 10:33 pm

Hello, I have seen some mentions of the unit torr in the textbook as a unit for pressure in the ideal gas equation and I was wondering if we are required to ever use this unit in chemical equilibrium problems or if we should know how to convert this unit as I have seen the unit only in the text an not really anywhere else?

Hi! I think it's always good to know how to convert between different units, just in case they are asked for. Obviously, in homework and elsewhere, atm is used far more often than torr, but it could be valuable nonetheless, and it's a relatively simple conversion. Hope this helps!

I've seen it used in some textbook problems. The conversion is on the formulas sheet though so you don't have to worry about memorizing it!

To stay consistent and not get messed up with units, I would convert Torr to atm using 1atm= 760 Torr. But if you don't do this before using the ideal gas law, make sure to use the R constant 62.364 L*Torr/K*mol

It's definitely possible that it shows up, but regardless it's an easy conversion to atm or mmHg using the equation sheet

The conversion from Torr to atm is very straightforward (1 atm = 760 torr = 760 mm Hg), and it is on our equation sheet. So if units of pressure are expressed in Torr in any of the questions on the exam, you can just use the conversion to convert it to atm :)

is atm the most convenient/ common unit for pressure

I feel like it is the most commonly used unit for pressure at least in this class, but it would be good to know conversions between different units of pressure as well.

Additionally, the torr unit is also interchangeable with mmHg
