Ideal gases
Do ideal gases actually exist in real life? How would scientists work/model gases that do not behave ideally?

Re: Ideal gases
Hi :)
Based on my understanding, ideal gases do not exist in real life because there will always be things like intermolecular interactions that the ideal gas law does not account for. There are also equations that account for these extra interactions that make ideal gases not ideal, and more "real". For example, van der Waal forces can be accounted for by the van der Waal equation, which takes volume of gas molecules and their intermolecular interactions into account to model their behavior.
I hope this helped :)

Re: Ideal gases
Hi Olivia,
In addition to the previous response, there are a few more concepts at play in reality that the ideal gas equation ignores. Ideal gases assume that the collisions between the particles are completely elastic, but in reality there is some energy lost during these collisions. Ideal gases are also assumed to have no volume, when reality they do have volume.
I hope this helps!

Re: Ideal gases
Ideal gases do not exist in real life to my knowledge, however under certain conditions, it is possible for some gases to behave very similarly to ideal gases.

Re: Ideal gases
Although ideal gases don't exist in real life, it is useful for scientists to understand what their behavior would be in order to identify gas properties using simplified calculations. Ideal gases, by definition, have molecules that have no size and collisions which act with perfect elasticity. The simplification of these internal forces is therefore helpful in calculations, but not possible in real life.

Re: Ideal gases
Ideal gases don't ever actually exist, because small factors will always exist that makes gas nonideal. It's like trying to get to 0 Kelvin- you can get close, but you can't ever actually reach it. The concept however is useful because it models how gases should theoretically behave and lets us predict the behavior of nonideal gases too.

No they dont, but there is some gases that are very similar to ideal gases under certain circumstances

Re: Ideal gases
Ideal gases do not naturally exist, however, scientists are able to derive the existence of ideal gases and make them in a lab setting.

Re: Ideal gases
No ideal gases exist naturally in nature, but they can be created in the lab. However, the concept of an ideal gas is useful for understanding gas behavior and simplifying the calculation of gas properties.

Re: Ideal gases
Ideal gases don’t exist in real life because I think they assume that particles never hit each other, but they do in real life. They just help to simplify equations.

Ideal gases do not exist in real life, yet there are some gases that behave similarly to ideal gases.

Re: Ideal gases
Hi! If I am correct, ideal gases do not exist in real life as we know them. There are gases that share some characteristics and behave similarly, but they don't occur naturally. They can be produced in a lab.

Re: Ideal gases
No they do not. They are ideal --- gases. The equation just places it in a more perfect world solution.

Re: Ideal gases
Ideal gases don't exist in real life, but they are a useful margin for scientists to learn from variations from the "ideal" gas state, which is only a theoretical concept used to compare the behavior of real-life nonideal gases to ideal conditions.
