Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means that only one proton is donated. If an acid is polyprotic, then there are different Ka values for the protons being donated.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means an acid that has one ionizable proton or donate one proton.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Hi! As indicated above, a monoprotic acid is a compound that can donate only one proton, while a monoprotic base is a species that can accept only one proton. Further, a polyprotic acid is a compound that can donate more than one proton, like H2SO4, while a polyprotic base is a species that can accept more than one proton, such as the CO3 2- ion. I hope this is helpful!

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means that the acid can only donate one proton (H+), so to set up the reaction equation, it would like like this: HA + H2O <---> A- + H3O+.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic refers to an acid with only one proton that gets donated (just one H+). If the acid is polyprotic, like H2SO4, the acid can donate 2 H+ ions in different steps.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Also worth noting is that when we have a polyprotic acid (able to donate more than one proton (H+)) it dissociates each one in its own step -- for example, a diprotic (2 H+ available for donation) will ionize in 2 steps. On the other hand a diprotic base (one containing 2 OH- ions) dissociate in one step.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic in terms of acids and bases, refers to one proton. So in a reaction, a monoprotic acid will only be able to donate one proton whereas a monoprotic base will only be able to accept one proton.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic acids are acids that only able to donate one proton. Monoprotic bases are bases that can only accept one proton. One the other hand, polyprotic acids can donate more protons, as polyprotic bases can accept more.
Monoprotic acid example: HCL
Triprotic acid example (3 protons donated): H2PO4
Monoprotic acid example: HCL
Triprotic acid example (3 protons donated): H2PO4
Re: What does monoprotic mean?
basically acids that can only release one proton for eg HCL because it only releases 1 H+

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
A monoprotic acid releases only one H+ proton. Whereas a polyprotic acid has multiple proton transfers, a monoprotic acid will only have one.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means that an acid can donate only one proton (H+) ion during a reaction.
Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Hi! a monoprotic acid is an acid that can donate only one proton, and with that said this also means that, a monoprotic base can only accept one proton
Re: What does monoprotic mean?
You can think of it as one molecule of a monoprotic acid would produce one molecule of hydronium ion

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means only one proton is donated, so there's only one dissociation equation associated with the substance.

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
mono means one, and protic refers to proton. That is why, monoprotic means when acid will only donate one proton of H+

Re: What does monoprotic mean?
Monoprotic means that it only has one proton to donate. For example, a monoprotic acid will only donate 1 hydrogen ion during the reaction.
