Textbook Problem 3F.5

Postby Meghan Yi 3H » Mon Nov 13, 2023 9:49 pm

This question asks to identify which of the following substances is likely to have the higher normal melting point and I got stuck on part B:
C2H5OC2H5(diethyl ether) or C4H9OH (butanol).

I was reading through the answer key and the explanation was that butanol has a higher melting point because of the hydrogen bonding however, doesn't diethyl ether also have hydrogen bonding?

Hi Meghan,

Diethyl ether (and ethers in general) do not have hydrogen bonds. If you try drawing the lewis structure, you'll see that H forms covalent bonds with C and O is only bonded with C.
