strength of intermolecular forces

Postby VivianWang_2K » Fri Nov 01, 2024 11:11 am

Hi!
I know the differences between the different intermolecular forces, but I wonder if some are stronger than the others and why. Thank you!

Hey,

Typically, hydrogen bonds are the strongest IMF, then followed by dipole-dipole forces, and then London dispersion forces (van der Waals). This is because dipole-dipole forces are formed from permanent dipoles, and hydrogen bonds are strong version of that. LDFs are formed from instantaneous dipoles. However, if the molecule is large enough with a large cloud of electron creating a large instantaneous dipole, LDF can be large.
