London Forces Significance

Postby 706379247 » Mon Nov 04, 2024 3:49 pm

Since london forces are quite weak compared to the other bonds, why is it significant that they exist? In other words, what is the purpose of london forces?

The purpose of London Forces is to create temporary dipoles and to attract molecules. They cause nonpolar substances to condense into liquids and to freeze into solids when the temp is lowered.

Each interaction is small, but they add up and therefore not ignored. Look at the examples I gave in class.
Pentane is a liquid at room temperature, but octadecane is a solid at room temperature.
