stronger bond

Postby Bethel Tesfamicael » Sun Dec 03, 2023 11:16 pm

In chemistry, hydrogen bonds are stronger but in biology covalent bonds for and example are stronger, is this because in biology we focus on more things in nature compared to chemistry which is more lab based.

Hydrogen bonds aren't stronger than covalent bonds. Hydrogen bonds are Intermolecular forces that can affect properties like melting and boiling point, while covalent bonds are the sharing of electrons that bind atoms together into compounds.

Both bonds play a strong and weak roles in the chemistry of our cells and bodies. For instance how strong covalent bonds hold together the chemical building blocks that make up a strand of DNA and how weaker hydrogen bonds hold together the two strands of the DNA double helix. Hydrogen bonds are weaker than covalent bonds because hydrogen bonds do not involve a formal electron exchange. The formal electron exchange strengthens the bond. In comparison, hydrogen bonds are weaker than covalent and ionic bonds but stronger than most Van der Waals forces.

The list of bond strength goes ionic, covalent, hydrogen, and then van der Waals in order from greatest strength to least.

The strength of a covalent bond is measured by its dissociation energy and most covalent bonds tend to be higher in their dissociation energy in comparison to hydrogen bonds
