### Energy of Interactions

In Dr. Lavelle's lecture notes for interactions between ions and molecules, he wrote:
1. Ion-Ion : Na+Cl- -250 kJ/mol

What does the -250 kJ/mol represent? How do you find this number if it is not given/what use does it have?

NaCl is an ionic bond. The way Lavelle calculated 250 k.j/mol. Is though calculating the amount of energy that exists in a bond between ions at a distance through Coulomb's law: the energy between 2 ions equals the product of two charges.

So E=(2.31 x 10^-19 J.nm)(Q1Q2/r^2)

Constant: (2.31 x 10^-19 J.nm)
Q1Q2: the product of two charges
r^2: distance or radius between the 2 nuclei

I think so. The syllabus says that test 3 will cover section 3.12 in the end of bonding and all of Molecular Shape and Structure.

This is touching on thermochemistry which I believe will not be covered on the test. I think he was just touching on the energy exerted and used during the formation or breaking of bonds to show which ones are stronger/weaker.
