Instantaneous dipole moment

Postby Marni Kahn 1A » Thu Nov 07, 2019 11:19 am

How long does an instantaneous dipole moment typically last?

In my searching I haven't found much more than a description of the duration as "an instant". Probably an arbitrarily brief moment of time that does not bear relevance for topics covered in this class.

Can someone clarify what "instantaneous dipole moment" means/refers to?

Instantaneous dipoles last for only an instant. Electrons are constantly moving and electron distributions are constantly changing. Therefore, the instantaneous dipoles created by the uneven electron distributions are constantly changing as well.

I don't think there's a specific length of time; it's simply an instant since there's always fluctuations with electron distribution.

Instantaneous dipole moments, like Van der Waals forces, last for fractions of seconds in the sense that the electron densities continually shift causing continual and sporadic interactions in different regions of the two molecules.
