Covalent bonding

Postby Elyssa Smith 4B » Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:01 am

Are covalent bonds an intermolecular force? Why or why not?

A covalent bond would be classified as a intramolecular force as it occurs within a molecule. Covalent bonds are intramolecular because they hold atoms together in molecules and polyatomic ions.

Covalent bonding is considered as intramolecular force as it holds atoms together in a molecule but intermolecular forces are forces of attraction or repulsion between molecules.

Intermolecular forces occur between two molecules, not between two atoms. Examples of intermolecular forces include induced dipole - induced dipole (LDFs), induced dipole - dipole, dipole - dipole, ion - dipole, and ion - ion (in order of increasing strength). Induced dipole - induced dipole forces are present in all nonpolar molecules.

On the other hand, intramolecular forces such as covalent bonding occur between the individual atoms in a molecule.

Covalent is intramolecular because it is within a molecule and between atoms
