If two dipole moments cancel out in a molecule due to structure does it still have dipole-dipole bonding? Also, if they cancel would the molecule still be considered polar?

If the two dipole moments cancel out (ex. CO2), the molecule is considered non-polar and doesn't have dipole-dipole interactions.

The molecule overall would be considered nonpolar so it would have no dipole-moments.

In the case of CO2 for example, the dipoles created by the Carbon and Oxygen are both pointing towards the central Carbon, they would cancel each other out and there would be no dipole moment. CO2 is nonpolar in this example.

If the dipole moments cancel each other out, the molecule is no longer polar, it is non-polar, and there is no dipole moment. I like to consider this in terms of electronegativity and the relative charges on molecules, instead of just memorizing facts.

A molecule is polar if it has dipole moments so if the dipole moments cancel out then the molecule is nonpolar.
