Force strength order

Postby Annie Tong 2G » Thu Nov 12, 2020 9:35 pm

Can anyone place these forces in order of increasing strength (weakest to strongest)? Ionic & Covalent (even though I know these two aren't intermolecular forces), Ion-Ion, Ion-Dipole, Dipole-Dipole, Dipole-Induced Dipole, Induced Dipole-Induced Dipole/London Forces, Hydrogen Bonding.

I tried searching them up online but the results gave a mixed answer. Any help is appreciated!

So the order goes like this (strongest at top weakest at bottom)
Ion-ion (ionic bond)
Hydrogen bond
dipole-dipole
dipole-induced dipole
London Dispersion Force

(Hydrogen-LDF are all covalent bonds)

I think the person above forgot to include covalent bonds! This would go between ion-ion and hydrogen bond. I agree with everything else they said, I hope this helps.

Order of intermolecular force from strongest to weakest:
Hydrogen bond(strongest form of dipole-dipole interaction)
dipole-dipole
dipole-induced dipole interaction
Van der Waal's forces
Order of intramolecular forces:
Ionic bond(assume solid ionic compound)
covalent bond
This answer is given by Khan Academy so it is trustworthy.
