ionic liquids and viscosity

Postby Milli Zunich 3I » Sun Oct 24, 2021 1:02 am

Do ionic liquids have a higher or lower viscosity? Does viscosity really matter that much in their ability to conduct electricity?

Hey!

Ionic liquids are usually highly viscous, but lower viscosity usually correlates to higher conductivity. So, high viscosity impedes on the ability for the liquid to conduct electricity. Hope this helps :)

Thanks! Is there a reason why this happens, though?

Ionic liquids have greater viscosity compare to other organic solvents, being considered viscous. The strong electrostatic interactions between cations and anions is what makes the ionic liquid higher in viscosity.
