Larger Molecules

Postby Thomas Van Fleet 1K » Thu Nov 09, 2023 12:55 pm

Why are larger molecules more likely to be in a solid/liquid state vs. a gas state?

Hi, larger molecules have greater intermolecular forces which holds the atoms of the molecule tighter together. This means they are less likely to have gas states.

Larger molecules have higher boiling/ melting points due to their increased London Dispersion Forces. Remember that London Dispersion Forces are related to the mass of the molecule as well as the structure of the molecule.
