Can someone explain what "surface tension" is?

Surface tension is the energy required to increase the surface area of a liquid due to intermolecular forces.

Surface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist external forces. It is the result of the cohesive forces between the molecules in the liquid, which causes the surface of the liquid to behave like a thin, elastic membrane.
