Closed System

How can energy be exchanged in a closed system if it is insulated from the external environment (surrounding)?

A closed system is not necessarily insulated, it just has to be sealed. An isolated system is insulated and cannot exchange energy with the surroundings.

A closed system just means that matter cannot be transferred in or out, but energy still can. For example, if a beaker is sealed, it is a closed system, but work and heat can still be transferred, so it is exchanging energy with its surroundings.

A closed system is like a closed plastic bottle. The water will become warm if left out but the water cannot evaporate. An isolated system, however, is insulated and energy won't be transferred to the surroundings.

Only an isolated system prevents the exchange of both energy and matter between the surroundings and the system. In a closed system, energy can still be transferred.

I agree with what was said above. Closed systems are only sealed and are not insulated, meaning that energy can still be exchanged with the surroundings. Only matter cannot be exchanged as that characteristic only apply to open systems.

A closed system just means that matter (i.e. "stuff") can't be added or removed. This system, however, isn't insulated like an isolated system is. Therefore, heat can be exchanged between the system and its surroundings.

I think you are confusing a closed system with an isolated system. Energy can still be transferred in and out of a closed system; matter is the thing that cannot enter or escape. Hope this helps!

A closed system is where energy, not matter, can still be exchanged with the surrounding. This means that the system is not being insulated; rather, a system that is insulated would be an isolated system rather than a closed system.

Closed systems are not insulated and can therefore exchange energy with its surroundings. What makes it closed is that is cannot exchange matter with its surroundings, and only isolated systems cannot exchange both matter and energy.

Closed system still can interact with surroundings just in a sealed container. So it’s like a water bottle with the cap, the amount of water cannot increase with rain but some of the water can evaporate because of the sun.

A closed system does not have to be insulated, but rather sealed from the surroundings. As such, matter can not be exchanged between the system and the surrounds, but energy can. For example, a beaker that is sealed can still be heated or cooled, which signifies a change in energy as the temperature of the system changes.

I think a closed system means that matter cannot be transferred in or out, but energy still can. A beaker is sealed, it is a closed system.

Make sure to differentiate between "closed" and "insulated". They both have lids in the beaker example, but "insulated" has the layer of heat protection around it. This insulated systems cannot have molecules go in/out, nor heat. However, "closed" systems still cannot have molecules go in/out. But heat IS able to move in/out.

A closed system is sealed which means matter can't be transferred between the system and its surroundings but that doesn't mean heat can't be transferred. For example, a coffee cup with a lid on is a closed system because even though no additional matter can get in or out of the cup, the coffee still cools down.

If a system is insulated, then no heat transfer can occur. This would be a trait on an isolated system where neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with the environment. A closed system is "isolated" in the sense that no matter can enter or exit the system, but energy can still be transferred. Think of putting the lid on a pot of water, then place the pot on a lite stove. So long as the lid is on, water can't escape and more water can be added. However, the water will start boiling because heat energy from the stove is being transferred in the system (closed system).

Hi! A closed system doesn't have to be insulated and can still interact with its surroundings, but matter cannot enter/exit the system.

An (ideally) insulated system is an isolated system where neither matter nor energy can be transferred between the system and surroundings while a closed system is one where matter cannot be transferred but energy (heat) can be transferred to/from the surroundings.

I agree with all the above posters, but I wanted to add that an insulated closed system would essentially be acting like an isolated system, where neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with the surroundings.
A closed system can only exchange energy with its surroundings through heat transfer, so if the system were to be perfectly insulated, the system couldn't exchange any energy at all with its surroundings. Hope this helps!

It is still exhanging energy with its surroundings and can still move in and out. A closed system is different to an insulated system, in an insulated system energy is not exchanged with its surroundings.

I think the way a closed system works is that energy is able to leave/enter the system, but matter cannot.
In an isolated system neither matter nor energy can leave/enter, and in an open system, energy and matter can both leave/enter.

In a closed system, there is no escape from what's inside and the surroundings. There is an exchange of heat from the insulation. The insulation helps to keep heat exchange to a minimum however heat can still escape. In an isolated system, no heat is exchanged.

A closed system just means that no substance can go in and out. However it is not insulated like an isolated system. A closed system still allows transfer of heat and energy. If you want a visual, I suggest to go back to Dr. Lavelle's Lecture #10 as there is a great graphic there showing the differences between an open, closed, and isolated system.

The main thing with closed systems is that you can't add anything into the inside of the system besides things like heat that can go through the walls.

In a closed system matter cannot leave, but the system can still be heated/cooled or compressed/expanded. This allows for energy change to occur. For example, if you boil water in a sealed container the water heats up, but cannot leave that container.

A closed system is when it is sealed, it does not mean that there cannot be energy transfers. In an isolated system it is both sealed and insulated and there cannot be any energy transfers.

A closed system and isolated system are different things. Energy can still be transferred through a closed system but not through an isolated system because it is insulated and doesn't allow matter or energy to transfer.

A closed system is closed to the exchange of matter, but it's not insulated to the point where it can't exchange energy. You're thinking of an isolated system.

It does not necessarily mean that the energy is constant within the system, just the matter. Energy can be exchanged without the exchange of matter.

A closed system is when there is no exchange of matter in and out of the system. For example, when a bottle is sealed. Only energy can be exchanged with the surroundings.

Energy can be transferred in and out of a closed system as heat can be exchanged with the surroundings. If a closed system is insulated then there is no exchange with the surroundings.

An example of a closed system would be a sealed beaker, therefore matter cannot go in and out. But this does not mean its insulated, so heat can still exchange with its surroundings.

A closed system is not necessarily insulated, but rather sealed. As a result, matter cannot be transferred, but energy can. An example would be an ice back and how the contents inside sealed within, but the heat between body and ice pack are still being transferred between one another.

I think that it's the isolated system that would be insulated, not the closed system. Professor Lavelle gave the example of a closed test tube during one of the lectures. Since the tube is sealed, no mass can be exchanged, but energy still can be.

Energy can move in a closed system, but matter cannot. Thus, there can still be transfer of heat to affect what is inside the system.

Hi! Closed systems don't have to be insulated, so heat can still escape. For example, heat can escape or enter through a plastic bag. So, if you put ice in a plastic bag, it would melt since heat exchange can still happen with the surroundings.

energy can still be exchanged in a closed system because it is only unable to exchange matter. For example, a closed box can still exchange heat with the environment outside the box, but not matter. You are talking about an isolated system, where nothing, including energy, can be transferred.

Closed systems are not 100% isolated. There can be an exchange of energy. However, because the system is closed, the contents of the reaction will remain in the closed system.

Energy can exchange energy in a close system through heat and transfer whereas an isolated system will not be able to do so at all.
