Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
An insulated system means that there is no transfer of heat, but work can still be done on the system. In an isolated system, there is no change in work or enthalpy.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
Insulated systems prevent heat transfer between the system and the surroundings, while an isolated system has no energy transfer whatsoever with its surroundings.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
insulated system = doesn’t exchange heat or thermal energy with its surroundings, but exchange of mass can occur
isolated system = doesn’t exchange heat or thermal energy with its surroundings; exchange of mass also does not occur with its surroundings

in an isolated system, no work or enthalpy can be done, whereas work can be done in an insulated system but no heat can be transferred.

Insulated systems don't have a heat transfer, but work can still be done. Meanwhile, isolated systems have no change in work and enthalpy.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
An insulated system cannot exchange energy, whether in the form of heat or thermal energy with its surroundings. However, it may exchange mass. An isolated system cannot exchange either energy nor mass. Both of them will maintain a constant amount of energy.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
An insulated system allows for the transfer of work. An isolated system does not allow for change in work or enthalpy.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
Insulated systems cannot exchange heat with the surroundings, but it is possible for an exchange of mass. Isolated systems cannot exchange heat or mass.

Insulated systems cannot exchange heat with their surroundings but it is still possible for there to be an exchange of mass. Whereas, isolated systems cannot exchange heat or mass with their surroundings.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
Insulated systems CAN exchange heat but NOT mass. Isolated systems CANNOT exchange heat or mass.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
Insulated systems mean that heat can be transferred in and out of the system where as isolated systems mean there cannot be any heat or mass transfer.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
In insulated systems, thermal energy (heat) cannot be transferred while neither energy or matter can be transferred in an isolated system.

I thought an insulated system is an example of an isolated system?

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
An isolated system is, by definition, a system that is isolated so that there is no change in internal energy (meaning that there is no heat transfer or work done by or on the system). This means that both q and w are always zero for the system so that the deltaU of the system is always zero. Moving forward, an insulated system is one where there is no transfer of heat. However, work can be done on or by an insulated system.

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
Hello,
These are the two main differences I can think of:
Insulated System:
-no heat transfer between system and surrounding
-mass transfer
Isolated System:
-no mass transfer
-no heat transfer between system and surrounding

Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
While an insulated system is one in which there is no exchange of heat or energy with its surroundings, yet potential for exchange of mass, an isolated system is one in which there is no exchange of mass or any form of heat or energy. In an isolated system, there is no exchange with its surroundings in any manner whatsoever.
Re: What is the difference between an insulated and isolated system?
The difference between an insulated and isolated system is that an insulated system cannot exchange heat with its surroundings, but it can exchange mass. However, an isolated system can exchange neither heat nor mass with its surroundings.
