Examples of Isolated Systems

Postby Marisol Meneses 2C » Sat Mar 18, 2023 8:50 pm

I know that isolated systems are rare or not likely in natural conditions, but what are some examples of isolated systems? Do they only occur in labs or is there a common example?

I think it's mostly unrealistic. But a real example for the textbook that was an isolated system was a very good thermo flask. Another example was a bomb calorimeter. I guess it theoretically does not allow for mass or energy to enter or exit the system.

An example would be a very efficient thermos flask. A thermos flask keeps the liquid inside of it cool by not allowing any transfer of heat to go into or out of the bottle.

Hi,

There are some common examples of an isolated system, such as a thermos. A thermos flask is totally isolated so there is no loss or gain of energy. It stays at a constant temperature and the volume does not change. (not sure if you know what this is but its basically like a yeti or hyrdroflask a cup meant to keep your drink at a constant temperature)

Hi!

Isolated systems can occur in labs and in other settings. Some examples of isolated systems might be a thermos or a different type of air-tight container. As long as there is no exchange of energy or mass, it would be an isolated system.

A prime example of an isolated system is the bomb calorimeter, in which no energy or matter can exit or enter the system.

Hi!

It’s difficult to maintain an isolated system, but a common example of one is a thermos since it’s relatively airtight and is created to trap its content and heat within.

Hello, an isolated system is generally unrealistic, but an example would be an inflated balloon. The surface of the balloon prevents matter from entering/exiting, essentially separating it from the rest of the environment. Isolated systems also don't involve heat or energy absorption/release.

Isolated systems are highly unrealistic and unlikely to occur in the natural world. However, a textbook example would be a perfectly sealed thermos: constant volume, no loss or gain of energy (such as in the form of heat).
