Closed Vs Isolated
What is the difference between closed and isolated systems? Aren't they the same thing?

Re: Closed Vs Isolated
closed systems can exchange energy while isolated systems can not exchange matter or energy.

Re: Closed Vs Isolated
Not exactly. A closed system is a system that has a fixed amount of matter but it CAN exchange energy with the surroundings. Conversely, an isolated system is a system that cannot exchange matter or energy with the surroundings.

Re: Closed Vs Isolated
A closed system can still allow energy to be exchanged with the surroundings, whereas an isolated system has no exchange in volume, heat, or energy

Re: Closed Vs Isolated
A closed system is one that is only closed to matter. This being said energy or heat can still flow through the system and to the surroundings. An isolated system is a system in which nothing is able to flow in or out of it. In this case, your energy or heat is held constant because there is nothing being exchanged.
Re: Closed Vs Isolated
A closed system can still have heat transfer while an isolated system cannot. Also, open systems can have heat transfer and mass transfer. An example of a closed system is a sealed beaker of water that is not insulated. An example of an isolated system may be the combustion of glucose in a bomb calorimeter. It is also important to acknowledge that no system is 100% isolated.

Re: Closed Vs Isolated
In a closed system, mass cannot exchange with the surroundings, but energy can. In an insulated system, heat transfer (energy) is restricted, but mass exchange can still occur.
